Cherokee Sound, Abaco

A must visit!

Go back in time when you visit the quaint little settlement of Cherokee. The narrow streets and small clapboard homes will whisk you away to a time long forgotten. This little fishing village has only one grocery store, and a gas dock/station on the tiny harbour. Two churches a school house and several historical sites. 

There is a small grocery store if you need supplies, always call before you go to be sure they are open (242-366-2022). Sometimes they have homemade goodies, like Jams, Jellies, Pies or Bread. They also sell T-Shirts and a few souvenirs, etc.

There are two churches you can attend in Cherokee Sound. The Ebenezer Methodist Church or The Assembly Of God. The Ebenezer Church is an amazing old building that was built out of cut limestone rock and was beautifully restored by the community in recent years.

Things of interest - The Walter Sands School House, Monument to Fishermen Lost at Sea, The Cherokee Sound Library, The Shell Collection, The Graveyard and much more.

Don’t miss the Long Dock! It is the longest wooden dock in the Bahamas and so it is appropriately named. It has been lost in many hurricanes but the men in the community always pull together to rebuild it. It did suffer some damage during Hurricane Dorian but will be rebuilt.

Getting there

You can visit Cherokee Sound by boat or car. 

If going by boat, tie the boat up at the public dock just past the gas station. The boat ride is a short 10 minutes. It is best to go at high tide at the water is very shallow getting into the harbour at Cherokee.

By car it is approximately at 35 minute drive on a very windy road. You will pass the road to Pete's Pub on the way there, so go early and have lunch at Pete's Pub. Call Pete's Pub to be sure they are open. They usually are closed Mid August to November first.
